The Most Instagrammable Spots On UWI St. Augustine Campus

Tucked away in the growing community of St. Augustine, The University of the West Indies main campus is a picturesque combination of modern and early 20th-Century architecture and treasured green spaces. Its sprawling landscape means that there are tons of Instagrammable spots on and around campus. Here are some of our picks!

1. I Am UWI Graffiti Mural

Created in 2011, the ‘I Am UWI’ graffiti mural is located at the heart of the Student Activity Centre (SAC) and is the perfect way to show off your campus pride. Its second name is the Whisper Wall, and rumour has it that if you whisper on one end, you can hear the person on the other end!

2. UWI Administration Building

The UWI Administration Building or “Main Administration Building” as it’s commonly known is one of the most iconic structures on campus and has quite the history. Before its use as an administrative facility, it was the building of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA), the forerunner to The UWI St. Augustine Campus. After being built in 1926, it housed the principal’s and registrar’s offices, the library (on the top floor), classrooms, and laboratories. Today, The UWI’s Old Administration Building has shed most of its previous functions but kept the Registrar’s Office, Human Resources Appointments Section, and the Bursary. The building is a classic monument that makes UWI…UWI! It’s a great spot to grab a shot and let the world know you’re officially joined the UWI family as a new student, show off your Pelican pride, have your grad photoshoot, and capture other major life moments.

3. Samaan Tree near the Dudley Higgins Building

Located near the Faculty of Agriculture, this striking tree is hard to miss. Whether you need a moment to unwind between lectures or a scenic spot to study, snapping a photo under the Samaan tree is a must-have Instagrammable moment.

4. Mural for Conservation and Change

The next time you walk the halls of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), you’ll be greeted with a stunning and bold mural sporting the message “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” placed strategically on an ocean-scape being polluted. A collaborative project of the UWI DCFA Visual Arts students and The UWI Biological Society, the mural is a powerful message highlighting the need for us to do everything we can to save the environment, especially in the Caribbean. Take a snap in front this mural to demonstrate your advocacy for climate change and conservation.

5. Zoological Museum

Capture some of UWI’s wild side at the Zoological Museum. With an expansive collection containing a wide range of specimens from all the major animal groups from all over Trinidad & Tobago, Caribbean and South America, you can learn about various mammals, birds, crustaceans, fossils, and archaeological objects. Here, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to channel your inner Jurassic Park and take some of the coolest photos ever.
